What is referred pain, and how should I read these results?

A trigger point is a tight, sensitive spot in a muscle. It can send pain to another part of the body, which is called referred pain. That is why the place that hurts is not always the source. You can read more in Referred Pain Explained and What Is a Trigger Point?

The muscles listed under "Most often involved" are the ones most commonly linked with that symptom in trigger point references. "Also worth considering" muscles are linked less often. If you pick more than one symptom, muscles that match several of them move to the top.

These lists show possibilities, not a diagnosis. A hands-on exam is needed to tell whether a muscle is actually involved, and many symptoms listed here also have causes that are not muscular.

Disclaimer: The Trigger Point Pain Finder is an educational tool designed to help you understand muscle-related pain patterns. It is not an exhaustive list of all possible causes of pain and is not a medical diagnosis. Please consult a qualified healthcare provider about any injury, neurological symptoms, or pain that may have a non-muscular source. If you think you have a medical emergency, call 911.
