What Electroacupuncture Does for You

Electrical stimulation applied to acupuncture needles activates your body's natural pain-relieving system and retrains dysfunctional muscles.

💊

Amplify Pain Relief

Activates the endogenous opioid system, releasing enkephalin, endorphin, and dynorphin for drug-free pain reduction.

💪

Retrain Muscles

Motor point stimulation contracts and resets dysfunctional muscles, improving strength and coordination.

🔄

Speed Recovery

Increases circulation, reduces inflammation, and supports tissue healing for faster return to activity.

What Is Electroacupuncture?

Electroacupuncture involves adding gentle electrical stimulation to acupuncture needles. Depending on the frequency and technique, it activates different parts of the brain, which in turn releases different neurotransmitters and pain-relieving chemicals through the central nervous system.

It works through the body's endogenous opioid system, activating neurotransmitters that create analgesic effects (pain relief) and help regulate the body's response to stress. Electroacupuncture can also stimulate muscles to contract and relax, which may help reduce pain, improve muscle function, and increase range of motion.

At Morningside Acupuncture, we combine electroacupuncture with traditional acupuncture, trigger point dry needling, and myofascial release to address pain on multiple levels in the same session.

How Electroacupuncture Works

Different frequencies activate different pain-relieving pathways. Research shows this allows us to tailor the treatment to your specific condition:

LOW FREQUENCY (2 Hz)

Activates enkephalin, beta-endorphin, and endomorphin for deep, sustained pain relief.

HIGH FREQUENCY (100 Hz)

Activates dynorphin, effective for acute and localized pain.

ALTERNATING FREQUENCIES

Releases all four neuropeptides simultaneously for maximum therapeutic benefit.

10 Hz STIMULATION

May modulate Substance P, which influences the body's inflammatory process.

MOTOR POINT STIMULATION

Targets where nerves innervate muscles, causing a controlled contraction that resets dysfunctional muscle tone.

When We Use Electroacupuncture

Electroacupuncture is especially effective for conditions where pain has become chronic or where muscles need to be retrained.

Motor Point Acupuncture

Motor point acupuncture uses electroacupuncture at specific sites where nerves innervate muscles. The goal is to produce a controlled muscle contraction by activating the motor neurons that control that muscle's function.

Identifying the correct motor point is important because it requires less electrical input to stimulate a contraction, making the treatment more effective and more comfortable. This technique is particularly useful for muscles that have become inhibited after injury, surgery, or prolonged disuse.

We often combine motor point stimulation with trigger point dry needling in the same session, releasing tight muscles while reactivating weak ones to restore balanced function.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does electroacupuncture hurt?
Most patients describe a gentle pulsing or tapping sensation. The intensity is adjustable and we always start low and increase gradually based on your comfort. Many patients find it relaxing, and the electrical stimulation is often less noticeable than the needle insertion itself.
How is electroacupuncture different from a TENS unit?
TENS units deliver electrical stimulation through surface pads on the skin. Electroacupuncture delivers stimulation directly through acupuncture needles that are already inserted into the muscle or tissue, allowing the current to reach deeper structures more precisely. This makes it more effective for activating specific motor points and releasing deep trigger points.
Will I get electroacupuncture at every session?
Not necessarily. We use electroacupuncture when it's the right tool for your condition, often in combination with traditional acupuncture and dry needling. Your practitioner will determine the best approach at each visit based on how you're responding to treatment.
Is electroacupuncture safe?
Yes. Electroacupuncture is a well-established technique with a strong safety profile when performed by licensed practitioners. It's not appropriate for patients with pacemakers or certain cardiac conditions, which we'll screen for during your intake. Our practitioners are fully trained in electroacupuncture safety protocols.
Do you accept insurance?
We are out-of-network with most insurance plans but provide superbills for reimbursement. Patients may receive reimbursement as high as 50-100% of treatment. We accept Visa, Mastercard, AMEX, HSA, FSA, cash, and check.
Where are you located?
Morningside Acupuncture is at 900 West End Ave, Suite 1C, on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. We're near the 96th and 103rd Street subway stations (1, 2, 3 lines). Our first-floor office is fully accessible. Get directions.
