Plan Your Visit

Dealing with pain, tension, or another stubborn issue? Here's what to expect at your first visit to Morningside Acupuncture.

Upper West Side, NYC

Our Treatments

Our treatments combine traditional acupuncture, dry needling, trigger point therapy, and electroacupuncture as needed to address the neuromuscular and connective tissue causes of pain. We draw on multiple clinical traditions and use whatever combination produces the best outcome for each patient.

Modalities

Traditional Acupuncture Dry Needling Trigger Point Release Electroacupuncture Myofascial Release

We draw on traditional acupuncture, orthopedic sports acupuncture, and trigger point-based approaches like dry needling or trigger point acupuncture as needed, blending elements rather than applying a single fixed protocol.

Our myofascial release uses acupuncture needles, not manual hands-on pressure. Dry needling is itself a form of needle-based myofascial release that reaches deeper fascial restrictions than manual technique can.

What to Expect

Acupuncture needles are hair-thin and solid, several times thinner than the hollow hypodermic needles used for injections. With traditional acupuncture, you often won't feel the insertion at all. When you do, it's typically a brief dull, achy, or tingling sensation that fades within a few seconds.

Dry needling and trigger point work feel different. The needle targets trigger points and tight muscles, and when it reaches a trigger point it can produce a brief involuntary twitch and a strong ache that releases quickly. These sessions are more intense than traditional acupuncture, and it's normal to feel sore for up to 72 hours afterward, similar to what you'd feel after a deep tissue massage or a hard workout. That post-treatment soreness is expected and not a sign that anything went wrong.

How you feel during treatment depends on what we're doing. Patients receiving more traditional acupuncture often feel deeply relaxed and some fall asleep on the table. Research suggests acupuncture may help regulate the autonomic nervous system. After dry needling, it's common to feel worked-on before you feel better, with the strongest results often showing up a day or two later.

Initial appointments include a comprehensive intake, followed by treatment. Your treatment plan and recommended visit frequency will be discussed before you leave. Sessions generally run 45 to 60 minutes.

Before Your Appointment

  • Eat a light meal one to two hours beforehand. Arriving hungry or lightheaded isn't ideal.
  • Avoid coffee and stimulants right before your appointment. They can affect how your nervous system responds to needling.
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing. Shorts and a t-shirt work well. Treatment may involve points on the chest, abdomen, back, or upper thighs.
  • Don't schedule anything demanding right after. Any exercise should be done before your appointment, not after.
  • After treatment drink extra fluids, eat a good meal, and prioritize sleep. This gives the physiological response from treatment time to take full effect.

Insurance & Payment

Like most private acupuncture offices in NYC, we're an out-of-network provider. We don't bill insurance directly, but we make reimbursement as straightforward as possible. Payment is due at the time of each visit. We'll provide an itemized superbill you can submit to your insurer for possible reimbursement.
